Training New Generations
Metro Surgical was instrumental in bringing the Southeastern Campus of the Medical College of Georgia to St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital. Most of our physicians are on the teaching staff at the Medical College of Georgia, the Mercer University School of Medicine, or both. Dr. John Odom has been elected Teacher of the Year at the Medical College of Georgia on three separate occasions.
Mastery of General Surgery Fellowship
In 2016, Metro Surgical applied for a Fellowship with the American College of Surgeons. This fellowship program was created to give surgeons who had completed their residency an extra year of intense training known as the Mastery of General Surgery Fellowship. This program is active and thriving. It is a state supported entity meant to supply general surgeons to the state of Georgia and, to date, has been very successful. We have two surgical fellows each year, selected from a vast pool of candidates. Three of our former fellows now practice with Metro Surgical.
Teaching Surgeons From Around The Country
Our surgeons also have an impact providing additional training to other established, seasoned surgeons. Dr. John Odom and Dr. Anthony Foley are consultants to Medtronic Corporation, and have access to the latest developments in surgical technology. Dr. Foley is also a consultant for Intuitive Surgical, makers of the da Vinci robotic system.
They remain on the cutting edge of innovation as well as education. Surgeons travel from all over the United States to participate in our sessions and the list of people that we have trained is truly impressive.
